Aligned to Vivid Sydney, now the world’s biggest festival of light, music and ideas, the Good Design Festival showcases the best in product and industrial design, architectural design, digital and communication design, design strategy, service design and social innovation.

Attracting more than 10,000 visitors last year, the 2017 Good Design Festival promises to be one of the biggest celebrations of design, innovation and creativity this year.

The Good Design Awards Ceremony will celebrate and recognise the winners of the 2017 Good Design Awards.

The Good Design Awards celebrates the very best in design, innovation and creativity and is Australia’s longest standing and most prestigious design award dating back to 1958.

This exclusive black-tie event is a highlight on the international design calendar, attracting Australian and international design luminaries, industry thought-leaders, social, political and cultural dignitaries and mainstream media.


A night to celebrate design excellence...


The Good Design Awards Ceremony kicks off with pre-show drinks on the balcony of the OPT Customs Hall overlooking the world famous Vivid Sydney light show.

Arrive early to enjoy a drink overlooking the magnificent Sydney Harbour from the third floor of the Overseas Passenger Terminal.

The Good Design Awards Ceremony will take a new shape for 2017 by moving to a more dynamic theatre style format.

Held in the Customs Hall overlooking Sydney Harbour, the 2017 Good Design Award® winners will be announced with on-stage presentations for the Good Design Award® Best in Category winners, Good Design Award® Best Overall, Good Design Award® Sustainability winner and the coveted Good Design Award® of the Year for 2017.

Guests will be treated to front row seats as the sails of the Sydney Opera House are illuminated with beautiful imagery against a backdrop of Sydney’s skyline.

Guests attending the Good Design Awards Ceremony will be invited to the grand opening of the 2017 Good Design Showcase Exhibition in the Arrivals Hall of the Overseas Passenger Terminal on the foreshore of Sydney Harbour.

The Good Design Showcase Exhibition is an interactive exhibition featuring the 2017 Good Design® Selection and Good Design Award® winners and the best new concept designs from this year’s Young Australian Design Awards.

Guests who have received the Good Design® Selection and/or Good Design Award® will have the opportunity to collect their winning certificates and trophies at the Good Design Certificates and Trophy Bar located within the Showcase Exhibition where official photographers will be primed to capture winning smiles on camera for the world to see.

The Good Design Showcase Exhibition will be open to the general public following the Good Design Awards Ceremony and is expected to attract more than 30,000 visitors over the Vivid Sydney long weekend.

The Official Good Design Awards After Party is tipped to be the most talked about event in the design industry.

This event provides a spectacular backdrop to network with colleagues, clients and friends in one of the best locations during Vivid Sydney.

Guests will enjoy the electric atmosphere of Vivid Sydney and have the best vantage point for the world famous projections on the Sydney Opera House sails.

Guests will also be able to explore the Good Design Showcase with an exclusive preview to the exhibition prior to the public opening.

The Good Design Exchange Talks features Australian and international thought leaders who will share their inspiring stories about design.

Proudly presented by Good Design Australia in partnership with General Assembly, the Authentic Design Alliance and Factory Design District, the Good Design Exchange Talks provide a unique opportunity to to connect with the design community and learn from some of the best in the business.

Tickets to the Good Design Exchange Talks are free however, booking is essential as seats are limited.


DAY 1: F*ck Up Nights, Sydney  //  Friday 9 June

Presented by Good Design Australia in Partnership with General Assembly.

Five award winning designers will share the failures behind their success. Hear the often untold stories of failure and f*ck ups and how this is an inventible part of the design process! Each speaker will focus on their biggest failures and what they took from the experience to build success.

This event is a storytelling event where each speaker will dive into the nitty gritty about design explorations, failures and how these have shaped our perspectives of design today.

There will also be time for audience Q&A after each speakers presentation, as well as drinks, so please RSVP as spots are limited!

Aaron McKirdy, Design Director @ Chrometoaster (NZ)

Aaron has 20 years’ experience designing a broad range of some of New Zealand’s most recognised brands—Auckland Airport, Formway, Silver Fern Farms, and Outward Bound to name a few.

Since joining the team at Chrometoaster in 2008, Aaron’s love of design and ideas has created and revitalised numerous brands through compelling print or website experiences. He is involved in all stages of design from strategy and creative concepts through to the design development and production of projects. His work has received numerous accolades and awards.

Dave Turnbull, Co-Founder @ Chrometoaster (NZ)

Dave is co-founder and Experience Director at Chrometoaster, an independent, multi-disciplinary design firm that specialises in solving public sector problems with leading-edge design and digital engineering. He works with the largest organisations in New Zealand to promote co-design and improve the interface between Government and the public.

Having been at this for a couple of decades, Dave has seen his fair share of f*ck ups — both at the wheel and looking on in horror. Nowadays he leaves the most potentially career-ending projects to his talented team of designers and engineers, and takes credit for their success whenever possible.

David Davenport, Design Direction Lead @ Breville (Aus)

When David took a Walkman apart at the age of 12 and failed to put it back together he knew design was for him. He studied Design in London and worked at consultancies before starting a business creating wacky advertising vehicles. When that failed he followed a girl to Oz.

After working at numerous design firms he settled at Breville 14 years ago when it was a team of 7. Today it has over 60 and David Leads the Design Direction. He holds the Guinness World Record for the Fastest Furniture.

Calir van Veen, Founder / Brand and Customer Experience Strategy Consultant @ CVV (Aus)

A proven business leader, brand strategist and human-centred customer experience designer. Clair has a unique combination of strategic thinking, high creativity and strong commercial focus. She uses design thinking methodologies to build empathy, inspire innovative thinking and design genuine business solutions.

Her strategic leadership has contributed to the transformation of brand experiences for category leading organisations in retail, retail services, health and property. Past clients and employers include Woolworths, Westpac, Westfield, ANZ, Savills, Witchery and Telstra.

Craig Davies, Co-Founder / CMO @ Sendle (Aus)

Craig Davis is an entrepreneur, keynote speaker and teacher. Presented by Good Design Australia, the Good Design Showcase is an interactive exhibition featuring the finalists and winners of this year’s Good Design Awards and Young Australian Design Awards.

Guests will be able to explore the very best in design and innovation from Australia and around the world. From cutting edge electronics, consumer products and medical breakthroughs to the latest sporting equipment and fashion accessories, architectural design, digital and communication design.

The Good Design Showcase Exhibition is open to the general public over the June long weekend and is excepted to attract a record number of visitors in 2017.
