A ground-breaking start up company from Byron Bay in NSW, Flow Hive, has been awarded the most prestigious award for design and innovation in Australia by taking out the 2016 Good Design Award of the Year.

Australia's Good Design Awards, which date back to the 1950s, have an enviable record of unearthing globally recognised talent across a broad range of industries and design sectors. Last year, the Tesla Model S received the Good Design Award of the Year.

Flow Hive delivers honey on tap – directly from a beehive without the need to crack open the hive. It’s an invention that has literally changed forever the way honey is cultivated and is now being used all over the world.

The Good Design Awards Ceremony coincided with the launch of Vivid Sydney, now the world’s largest festival of light, music and ideas. Winners were announced at a black tie gala night at the Overseas Passenger Terminal in Sydney attended by more than 600 industry guests.

Commenting on this year’s overall winner, Flow Hive, Dr Brandon Gien, CEO of Good Design Australia said: “Good Design has always been about ideas whose time has come – a showcase of the multitude of ways that design creates value, commercial and social in ways that matter today.

“Flow Hive is still about how design changes the landscape, but it’s a grassroots example. It’s about a new value eco-system that starts with an idea in a backyard, literally, and creates its own opportunity through crowdfunding because of its ability to capture peoples’ imagination.

“This is an ingenious improvement on an ancient human craft and it shows that design – as a process of solving problems that matter to people – has never been more accessible,” Dr. Gien said.

A team of renowned local and international judges evaluated more than 400 projects across seven categories:

Product Design
Service Design
Digital Design
Communication Design
Architectural Design
Social Innovation
Business Model Design
