Qantas customers travelling from Brisbane now have a stylish new space to relax, work and dine before their overseas flight, when they visit the recently opened Qantas Brisbane International Lounge. Drawing on local and regional influences, every bespoke architectural detail hints at the natural beauty of Queensland’s regions while being a modern and contemporary space. With an increase in space (27% floor space increase), spectacular views across the tarmac, flexible works zones, signature dining options including a Breakfast Hatch and Quench station, and a focus on health and wellbeing, this new lounge sets a new standard of luxury for customers.
Drawing inspiration from the natural beauty of the Queensland, this modern and contemporary lounge reflects the coming of age of Brisbane city. Through the clever use of design, furniture and natural light the lounge references the quintessential Queensland lifestyle.
The design of this lounge takes inspiration from the local region with interiors reflecting the Queensland landscape. Pale timber battening seen on some of the walls represents a fresh take on the traditional v join panelling seen on Queenslander style homes. The furniture is inspired by a relaxed approach to living in the tropical north with a predominance timber café seating mixed with low slung lounges and banquettes. Inset rugs bring colour and texture reminiscent of the reef, sandbars and waterways of Queensland’s coast and inlets. A custom light feature in the front entry curves organically like the Brisbane River and planting is used extensively throughout the lounge to mirror the sub-tropical landscape
A key feature of the lounge is a bespoke glass and light art installation called The Pulse of Our Ancient Land created by artist Jenna Lee from Indigenous design agency Gilimbaa, based in Brisbane. Inlaid into the glass is an abstract interpretation of the land of the QLD region as viewed from above, brought to life through glass, watercolour and lights. The artwork depicts the lands of the Jagerra, Yuggera, Turrbal, Quandamooka, Nunnukal, Goenpul, Ngugi, Kabi Kabi/Gubbi Gubbi and Yugambeh people, and was inspired by the stories shared by a specially formed group of respected Elders of each of the language groups of South East Queensland.
We’ve created and designed this lounge to offer customers areas that encourage interactive grazing all the way through to a more formal hosted dining experience. Our new signature breakfast hatch on the mezzanine level has chefs serving Rockpool-designed breakfast dishes to order such as healthy breakfast bowls, bircher muesli and French toast. A new lounge concept – Quench – focuses on hydrating customers before they fly and serves a range of non-alcoholic beverages including syrups from Bickfords and Buderim Ginger and a signature tisane blend designed by Rockpool. A communal dining table with views over the tarmac provides an inviting place to enjoy breakfast in the morning.
The spatial planning throughout the lounge has been carefully curated into flexible zones. The lounge design offers a mixture of communal and social gathering places such as a quiet area for reflection and or working, relaxation zones and a flexible zone that responds to changing needs – from a family zone in school holidays to a bar area in peak periods and is split across two levels. A key element of the design of the lounge was to deliver a notion of plug and play technology throughout the lounge.
