Museum of Applied Arts and Sciences Design Award

Since 1992 the Powerhouse Museum, part of the Museum of Applied Arts and Sciences (MAAS), has recognised excellence in Australian product design with its own Design Award and Selection as part of the annual Australian Good Design Awards. The winning products are displayed in the Powerhouse Museum for one year. Some of these products and relevant design models and documents are added to the Museum’s permanent collection of Australian design.

The Museum of Applied Arts and Sciences Selection is made from the annual Good Design Awards finalists and the criteria include good design, innovation and the significance of a product to Australia’s material culture. Products must demonstrate innovation in design, technology or materials that are of real benefit to users. They must also show potential to become important in the lives of Australians, be significant to Australian industry or provide an opportunity for Australian design to be recognised in the global marketplace.

The Museum of Applied Arts and Sciences Design Award is given to a product that has potential to make a significant improvement to the quality of health, wellbeing or the environment. This Award recognises the important role for design in harnessing the challenges of science and technology to make a positive impact on our lives.

Safe Work Australia Award for Good Design

Health and Safety by Design.
The Safe Work Australia Award for Good Design is a joint initiative between Safe Work Australia and Good Design Australia and was developed to raise awareness of the role of good design to support work health and safety.

The Award was established on the premise that good design is the most effective and tangible means of creating a healthy and safe working environment. When utilized effectively, a focus on health and safety by design helps eliminate hazards and risks before they enter the workplace by improving the design of products, structures, plant and substances, work processes and systems.

The Australian Work Health and Safety Strategy 2012-2022 is Safe Work Australia’s framework to drive key national activities to achieve improvement in work health and safety. This strategy promotes collaboration between Commonwealth, state and territory governments, industry, unions and other organisations to reach the vision of ‘healthy, safe and productive working lives’.

The Safe Work Australia Award for Good Design is selected from Finalists in the annual Good Design Awards. The Award is presented at the Good Design Awards Gala Night as a standalone award and celebrates the importance of good design in improving work health and safety practices.
